I was most impressed by Obama's comments on immigration. He stated simply that the issue has been exploited by both parties. Finally some candidate stated something close to the real issue. For W to hold a national address on immigration is borderline (no pun intended) insanity. Immigration usually pops up from time to time when unemployment level rises and immigrants are responsible for "stealing" American jobs (which is also far from the truth). However, now the heated debate on immigration is taking place when the the US has had a yearly average of 4.6% unemployment. For anyone who has studied Economics, you'll find that this is basically 0% unemployment. The majority of the 4.6% is represented by "frictional" unemployment or rather people who switching jobs or have recently quit. This is completely normal for a healthy economy - zero unemployment does not exist.
I still cannot believe that this keeps popping up as an "issue." Our borders with Mexico and (oh my God) Canada are secure. Most illegals don't run across the border to get to the US, but rather fly here (legally) and overstay their tourist visas.
I wish the candidates would drop this (non)issue, which would also remove a good dosage of political paranoia to "securing our borders."
